New Works by Kelsey Brookes

Artist Kelsey Brookes (instagram @KelseyBrookes)  posted some recent photos of some of his new circular painting works which we’re posting here so you can get a peek at them.

Also looks like Kelsey ran into someone with a tattoo based off one of his pieces and/or designs.

LOS ANGELES, CA:  Eighty Four Films and artist Jay Howell present their new video “Mountain Jam” to go along with Jay’s “Mountain Jam” shirts for VANS.  It’s got rad art, music and animation!  It makes me want to skateboard in the woods and burst through a bear!  But also makes me want that shirt.

Jay’s “Mountain Jam” shirts are available exclusively through Vans: bit.ly/wchJt3.

OTW–Eric Elms–Wish You Were Here

Vans OTW Presents: Eric Elms Wish You Were Here

Shot and edited by renowned photographer Peter Sutherland, this mini-documentary follows Vans OTW Advocate Eric Elms through Tokyo for his Wish You Were Here exhibition at Common Gallery last fall.  Aside from elaborating on his means of expression, Elms also speaks candidly about his interest in the zine format, history of Kilroy, Japanese culture and more.

Dennis McNett at Boys and Girls Club

LAGUNA BEACH, CA:  While Brooklyn based artist Dennis McNett was getting ready for his solo show, Wolfbat Shamans and the Whale of Gratitude, at AR4T Gallery, he first held a Wolfbat masking making workshop at the Boys and Girls Club. 30 boys and girls got to spend two afternoons with Dennis, making some really cool ass masks.  Kids and parents alike said it was hands down one of the most fun projects to date. Thanks Dennis and Boys and Girls Club Art Director, Emily Murray!

Opening Photos from Wolfbat Shamans and the Whale of Gratitude at AR4T Gallery 2.4.12

LAGUNA BEACH, CA: We cruised down to check out Dennis McNett’s much anticipated solo show, Wolfbat Shamans and The Whale of Gratitude, at AR4T gallery Saturday, February 4th, presented by VANS.   The show was hands down amazing, from hand-carved wood Shaman Masks and totem faces, Portholes, Shields, prints, and a seriously impressive installation–the Whale of Gratitude.  Congrats on a great show Dennis. Everyone should go see this.

Girlfriend Miryam and artist Dennis McNett.

Torrey and Dana from AR4T gallery! Thanks again!!

Also equally intriguing is Dennis’s mythology behind the show: Wolfbat Shamans and The Whale of Gratitude.

Two Shaman have conjured the Whale of Gratitude by opening a porthole to the world.  The whale grows larger and larger with more gratitude.

Using the Shamans as guides, you the viewer are the newest Shaman.

The show is the ceremony for the new beginnings of the whale and its annual journey.  When the whale is overgrown, it pours out its gratitude back through a second porthole, which dispenses all the positivity back around.

During this, the Shamans guide the tribesmen through the portholes: each with a different purpose, like contacting your ancestors for advice. Every year this will happen.

I think it’s a pretty awesome tale for the whole show, reminding adults and kids about gratitude, tradition, and power of mythology.

Harry Wirtz Elementary School Murals by Rich Jacobs, Tim Kerr, Albert Reyes, Seitaku Tak Aoyama, and Yusuke Hanai

PARAMOUNT, CA:  Harry Wirtz Elementary School were surprised Monday morning by the works by artists Seitaku Aoyama, Yusuke Hanai, Rich Jacobs, Tim Kerr and Albert Reyes who all stopped by over the weekend to create some beautiful and inspiring murals.

This was all not possible if not for the work of teacher Erik Caruso who spearheaded this effort to teach kids about art while there is no official arts program.  We’d like to tip our hats to Erik Caruso, Russ Pope, and the Vans artists who came out to beautify the school with some cool art!

We’ll have some photographs of the finished murals with students to post soon!

Proud parent Yolanda Long, student Terrence Barr, and teacher Erik Caruso.

Each artists created an assignment and choose the ones they liked the best.  Terrence was one of those individuals who were chosen for his work on the Rich Jacobs’s assignment.

Artist Tim Kerr’s mural featured three inspirational people and quotations which students and the board voted on: Pancho villa, Anne Frank, and Stevie Wonder.

Tim had student Terrence help him out on the mural. Some hands-on learning here.

Artist Rich Jacobs who just had an opening at New Image Art gallery the night before takes a gander at his mock-up for the mural.

Sacramento-based artist, SKINNER recently worked on a shirt for Vans, and put together this sweet time-lapse.  Gotta say his art style is S-I-C-K and I pretty much dream of drawing like he does.
